Questions to Ask a Bernedoodle Breeder

Where do the puppies grow up?

Puppies raised in a home, handled every day and used to ordinary household noise tend to settle faster in theirs. Ask where the litter lives from birth to going home, and ask for photos of it.

What health testing have the parents had?

For a Bernedoodle, the tests usually discussed are hips and elbows (OFA or PennHIP) on both parents, eyes, and DNA panels for conditions in the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle, such as degenerative myelopathy and von Willebrand disease. Which generation is the puppy, and what coat should I expect?

F1, F1b and multigen puppies can have quite different coats. Ask what the generation is and what coat the breeder expects, and remember that nobody can promise a non-shedding coat. F1, F1b and multigen explained.

How big will the puppy grow?

Ask the parents' weights and what size the breeder expects, and treat it as an estimate: Bernedoodle sizes are conventions, not a standard. The Bernedoodle size chart.

What comes with the puppy?

Ask in writing: the vet check, vaccinations and deworming for its age with the record, any microchip, a contract, and what any health guarantee covers and for how long.

How will the puppy get home?

Ask exactly how and when, and what it costs: collecting in person, a flight nanny or ground transport are the usual options.

What happens if things do not work out?

A good contract says what happens if you can no longer keep the dog, and many breeders ask to be told first so they can help.
