Getting Ready for Arrival Day
- Set up a quiet corner with a crate or a small pen, a soft bed and a water bowl.
- Have puppy food ready. Your puppy pack includes food your puppy already knows, which helps settle a nervous tummy.
- Puppy-proof the room: tuck away cables, shoes and anything small enough to swallow.
- Book a vet appointment for the first 72 hours.
- Pick up the basics from the supply list below, and choose a name: the Bernedoodle names guide has ideas.
Puppy Supply List
- Slicker brush and metal comb: A wavy or curly coat mats close to the skin unless it is brushed right through.
- Detangling spray: Makes brushing kinder on a puppy coat.
- Nail clippers or a grinder: For a trim every few weeks.
- Gentle puppy shampoo: For a bath every few weeks, or after a muddy walk.
- Ear cleaner and cotton pads: Floppy, hairy ears trap moisture, so check and clean them every week.
- Puppy food: Start on the food in the puppy pack, then change over slowly if you want to.
- Food and water bowls: Heavy enough that they do not tip over.
- A harness, collar and leash: A harness is kind on a small neck.
- A crate with a soft bed: Sized for the grown dog, with a divider while your puppy is small.
- A puppy gate or playpen: To keep your puppy safe while you are busy.
- Chew toys and soft toys: Puppies teethe until they are about six months old.
- A puzzle toy: Bernedoodles are bright and enjoy working for a treat.
- Enzyme cleaner: For the house-training accidents that will happen.
The coat is the part new owners underestimate: grooming a Bernedoodle covers brushing and groomer visits, and feeding a Bernedoodle covers how much a micro or a standard eats.
When Your Puppy Arrives
Travel is tiring, and a sleepy puppy on the first day is normal. Offer water, then a small meal, and let your puppy rest somewhere calm. Keep visitors to a minimum for the first day or two, and let your puppy explore one room at a time. Every puppy comes with guidance on what to feed, how often, and how to start house training.
The First Week
Take your puppy to your own vet within 72 hours for a general check; this keeps the 1-year health guarantee in place. Keep to a simple routine: meals at the same times, trips outside after every meal, nap and play, and an early bedtime in the crate near you. We are only a message away if you have questions.
